EXtra Years of Zest
The only thing that could spoil a day was people. People were always the limiters of happiness except for the very few that were as good as spring itself. ~ Ernest Hemingway
What a wonderful aspiration for us this March – to be “as good as spring itself”; to not limit our own happiness or the happiness of others. Besides, like spring, who knows what can grow from planting a seed of happiness in someone else’s garden or even in our own?
Jack is back! Join us on Wednesday, March 3 at 10 a.m. in Fellowship Hall for another installment of Jack Henson’s Antique Roadshow. You’re welcome to bring a treasure from home or just to come and be a lookyloo. Jack will amaze you with information and trivia about your heirloom and you may even come out of it with an appraisal. This is always an interesting event and with your treasures and Jack’s enthusiasm I can guarantee a good time. Following the Roadshow, we’ll have a potluck luncheon. This time around I challenge you to bring a dish that was a favorite of your family’s when you were growing up or one that was particular (or maybe, peculiar) to your family.
G'Day mate! You may know what “put another shrimp on the barbie” means, but if you’re wondering what “pass the dead horse” and asking for a “jumper” is, then join Haley Ettipio on March 18 at 10 a.m. in the Blue Room as she does a presentation on her amazing trip to “the land down under”—Australia. Haley will share her experiences of hiking the Outback, cave spelunking, snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef and learning about the Aboriginal culture. Afterward we’ll dine at (where else but) the Outback Steakhouse.
We had a great turn out for Frank Walmsley’s presentation on the greater and lesser doxologies in February. Thank you, Frank, for preparing such an interesting and interactive program for us. Thank you also to John Lile for providing the music. And speaking of music … on Valentine’s Day those of us who attended the play in Boerne learned that John’s organ recitations are in such demand that they tapped him to record the organ music for the play. Bravo John!
Whenever I ask Katheryn to pick something up for me she always says “yes,” smiles and then adds “I was called to serve.” It’s sort of a little joke but it puts me in mind of others in this church who also answered the call to serve. This year we had a fabulous Valentine’s Day luncheon courtesy of the hard-working fellowship team headed by Jack Henson. As a wife and mother I often wonder if my family appreciates “all that goes into” the dinners I make. When you see only the finished product on a plate I think it’s easy to forget the work that went into making it. And when you multiply my small family of four times sixteen (I think that comes out to roughly the number they served) that’s a whole lotta prepping, cleaning, cooking, and serving and of course – the much dreaded clean-up at the end. So the next time you see Jack or someone from the fellowship crew give them a hug and say “Thank you.”
Looking Ahead:
April 7 at 10 a.m.: Presentation at OHPC by Presbyterian Children’s Home Coordinator in the Blue Room.
April 22 at 10a.m.: Viva la France! Join us for the movie “Julie & Julia” in the Blue Room. Crepes anyone?
May 1: CEC Jubilee. We need folks to help staff our ‘decorate a cookie’ booth. Sign up sheet will be on our bulletin board. If you’ve been called to serve, like little kids and have a sweet tooth, then you will not want to pass up this once a year opportunity.
